SnS2 and ZrSe2 are special exceptions, as nanoparticles of these compounds preferably form rope-like structures.
It was clear from these measurements (Fig. 1) that upon increasing the nanotube concentration in our composites, the nanotubes form ropes and bundles with measured nanotube diameters about 1.4 ± 0.1 nm.
These protofilaments twist together to form rope-like fibrils that are typically 7 13 nm wide [2], [3] or associate laterally to form long ribbons that are 2 5 nm thick and up to 30 nm wide [4], [5].
For cultivated strains it meant isolates that form ropes presently, or those that have been documented to form ropes at one time, if an explicit reference was available.
Coiled coils are bundles of α-helices in which component strands wrap around each other to form rope-like super-helical structures (Lupas and Gruber, 2005).
Recent work with the amphiphilic Arabidopsis extensin, AtEx3, has shown this extensin can form rope-like and dendritic structures at interfaces through the lateral self-association of periodic hydrophilic and hydrophobic motifs [ 7].
Higher-order fibrils are insoluble and stain positive for dyes such as Congo red and Thioflavin T. They typically comprise 2 to 6 proto-filaments, with diameters of 2 5 nm and continue to form rope-like structures with diameters of 10 30 nm.
In this system, the hoist ropes form vertical ropes connecting the friction wheel and conveyances.
Note that it would have been too soft to shape in the traditional gnocchi way, by forming ropes of dough and cutting them into little cylinders: to reach that stage would have taken enough flour to attenuate the potato-leek flavor.
