As more than half of the area of the Achental region is covered with forests, the fuel demand for the wood gasification plant can be covered by the regional potentials of forest energy wood, landscape maintenance wood and residual sawdust.
In the study of forest energy crops [5], the authors estimate that the current biomass consumption (2.0 Mt/year) is close to the supply of residual biomass (2.0 2.5 Mt/year), and citing [6], 1.1 Mt/year are eucalyptus and 1.41 Mt/year are pine.
Correspondingly, Asikainen et al. [ 59] find a theoretical potential of forest energy to 7.1 EJyr−1 and technical 1.7 EJyr−1.7
This article proposes a forest-energy programme that will contribute to reducing the risk of forest fires in this Atlantic Region of Southern Europe.
The results show that any form of profitable forest use including energy wood production is welcomed by Spanish stakeholders, as it makes proper forest management economically viable thus contributing to the prevention of wildfires.
