The land is owned by the Clariant Corporation, the big Swiss chemical company, which allows archaeologists to dig to their minds' content in the forest at the Topper Site, named for the person who brought it to their attention more than 20 years ago.
The succession of soils is from the raw mineral type of the summit area, through the dark peaty loams of the Afro-Alpine zone and the strong brown loams of high organic content in the forest belt, to the ferruginous (iron-bearing) soils of the lower slopes.
HA content in the forest soil samples ranged between 0.3 and 34.8 μg N kg− 1 dry soil.
In tundra, taiga, and forest steppe systems, organic C content in the organic topsoil ranged between 20% and 45% of soil dry weight, with highest C contents in northern and middle taiga (Table 2), whereas in the steppe, the uppermost horizon contained only 4% of organic C (see above).
Moreover, these results highlight the opportunity to apply this analysis to a larger area, with the aim of monitoring the National Forest Inventory, and create a database of the forest carbon content in order to respond to requirements of the Kyoto protocol.

Three species with nonoverlapping distributions are saltwater tolerant, breeding in brackish water along the coastline and associated islands of Western or Eastern Africa (An. melas and An. merus, respectively), or in geothermal springs of high mineral content in the Semliki forest of Uganda (An. bwambae).
Cesium-137 content in the majority of edible mushrooms in forest litter decreased by 20 30% between 2005 and 2010.
The field moisture content in the RMS was lower (4.7 %) compared to forest site (7.7 %).
