PI152611 is specifically a forage line, a fast-growing, highly digestible grass utilized for livestock feed [ 5, 29].
Variation in genomic sequences coding for COMT, CCoAOMT1, and CCoAOMT2 was analyzed in relation to stover cell wall digestibility for a panel of 40 European forage maize inbred lines, and re-analyzed for a panel of 34 lines from a published French study.
In the FD, DD1, and DD2 populations, the total RNA representing high and low forage quality DH lines was pooled from the total RNA of those twenty lines in each of the populations with the highest or lowest digestibility (DNDF), respectively.
In the present study, partial genomic sequences of C4H, 4CL1, 4CL2, C3H, F5H, and CAD were obtained in a set of 40 European forage maize inbred lines.
In this study, variation in genomic sequences coding for COMT, CCoAOMT1, and CCoAOMT2 was analyzed in relation to stover cell wall digestibility for the same panel of 40 European forage maize inbred lines investigated by Andersen et al. [ 38, 42] for other "lignin genes" (Experiment 1).
These include a hypothetical 1 1 tradeoff in sage-grouse habitat and forage production (straight line) and the model results (labeled curve) (Fig. 4).

In agreement with the expectation of low levels of lignin, CD970581 and CD973094 were down-regulated in lines with high forage quality.
These changes result in the reduced p-coumaric acid to ferulic acid ratio that has been associated with increased forage digestibility in six barley lines [ 34], but, paradoxically, increased recalcitrance in switchgrass [ 35].
In addition, four regulatory genes, AI734769 (Class III HD-Zip protein 4), BM080754(Translational initiation factor eIF-4A), BM334752 (Zinc finger protein family-like), and BM333894 (YABBY-like transcription factor), were down-regulated in lines with high forage quality, whereas one regulatory gene, BU093700 (transcription factor and jumonji family protein) was up-regulated (Table 2).
