In the park, look out for the herd of red and fallow deer, and 50 grazing rare-breed Portland sheep.
The coastal plain is the calving area for the herd of 130,000 caribou.
The approximate annual milk production was 9,102 to 11,020 kg per cow for the herd during this study period.
A dairy farm can provide manure for a neighboring potato farm, for example, which can in turn offer potato scraps as extra feed for the herd.
The face-branding requirement had been a surprise to dairy farmers who signed up for the herd termination program earlier this year.
"We started saying what's good for the bird is good for the herd," said Tom Sharp, a Harney County rancher who helped launch the effort.
"The test results for the herd killed by lightning can give crucial answers in understanding how much the disease has spread," he said.
A clinical history for the individual animal and potentially also for the herd or population from which the animal originates is very important.
Researchers have strong allies in the dairy industry for their work on cow comfort, where affection for the herd is a strong motivator for management.
"We are waiting for the herd to see what the herd does," said Rob Killion, the director of admissions at Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
Sales of hunting licenses are down about a third, and if the eradication effort succeeds, experts expect it to take 5, 10 or 15 years for the herd to return to the zone.
