"The prevailing message is negative and they have to be held out to dry for it," Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., a Democrat from Paterson and a second-generation Italian, said in a telephone interview.
I therefore find the narrative of the APEs not liberating, but enslaving, to our worst self: for it essentially condones the pathology that created the crisis, by making the minority of the population, and the majority of the politicians, who are responsible for it, representative of Greeks.
"I thank all of you who will vote for it," said Representative Darrell Issa of California.
"I know enough to know I'm not voting for it," said Representative Jason Chaffetz of Utah.
But one who will not vote for it is Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democratic whip.
"It helps for him to aim for it," said Representative Ike Skelton, Democrat of Missouri and chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
"I understand George Bush is against it and Senator McCain is against it, but every veterans' group is for it," said Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.
"I wouldn't take anything for it," said Representative Dina Titus, Democrat of Nevada, her eyes rimmed red, as she left the House floor the other night.
"This was a bold step, and I commend them for it," said Representative Fred Upton, chairman of the House Commerce subcommittee on telecommunications.
"I offered to have a unifying party, to thank her for running and everything, and she was not up for it," said Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, a stalwart Quinn supporter who attended Tuesday's event.
