The company, a leading provider of technology services to the military, is well positioned in the growing market for defense information technology and intelligence services.
We need to implement encryption, not classification, for all government materials that are not accessed by the public, and particularly for defense information.
"Every leader of the opposition managed to come to Washington in the last year," said Nikolai Zlobin, a defense analyst at the Washington-based Center for Defense Information.
While it is unclear precisely how much China spends on defense, Japan spent $47 billion on defense in 2002, according to the Center for Defense Information.
"My view is that the government is failing to recognize the current threats," said Nikolai Zlobin, a Russian defense analyst at the Washington-based Center for Defense Information.
Bruce Blair, president of Center for Defense Information, argued at the same briefing that the development of a national missile defense was justifiably seen by Russia as a threat to its nuclear deterrent.
"The spending required to pursue these options is the real current issue, not the ABM treaty," argues Philip E. Coyle, who ran the Pentagon's testing office under the Clinton administration and is now an adviser to the Center for Defense Information, a nonprofit defense analyst group, in a draft report on the ABM treaty.
But Reagan has 2 1/2 years left in office to build more support for "Star Wars". Stephen Daggett, a senior research analyst at the Center for Defense Information, a private group that frequently criticizes defense programs, said the new President would propose reducing the SDI budget at his own peril.
"The government seems determined to put a lot of money into very expensive nuclear weapons projects at the expense of nonproliferation programs, which are hurting for funding," says Victoria Samson, a research analyst with the Washington, D.C. based Center for Defense Information, a think tank that monitors the U.S. defense industry.
But the President's own fiscal commission recently recommended still more cuts, and Defense Secretary Gates' plan of merely making Pentagon operations more efficient "is dead," says Winslow Wheeler, a Pentagon expert at the Center for Defense Information in Washington.
"There is nothing in Air Force planning for the Moon," said Theresa Hitchens, vice president of the Center for Defense Information, a private research group in Washington.
