Part of the problem we struggle with is the perception that Oxford is "not for" certain students – a problem that owes something to media reports.
The Arizona Legislature last May expanded the eligibility criteria for education savings accounts, which are private bank accounts into which the state deposits public money for certain students to use for private school tuition, books, tutoring and other educational services.
"There is a real concern about equity here, because if there are higher fees that will only gain access for certain students, does that really address the problem," said Paul Feist, the vice chancellor for communications of the California Community Colleges.
"It's great that some people can go to these places, but they are few and far between and only the right school for certain students," said Sandy Baum, senior policy analyst at the College Board and a professor of economics at Skidmore College.
One teacher asked about the impact at their school of poverty said: "Pupils who are complaining of feeling sick because they're so hungry in lessons, some students with poor personal hygiene due to family issues at home, some teachers leaving food in the classrooms for certain students as they know they won't have eaten either breakfast that morning or possibly tea the night before".
Fieldwork can prove to be a barrier for certain students due to the inaccessible nature of some field sites.
If you had mentioned to me that we should be introducing our students to a career in manufacturing, I would have balked or judged, believing those jobs were only for "certain" students.
Historically, low standards and expectations for certain students have translated into massive achievement gaps.
In addition, we found evidence for all three barriers, although some barriers were more salient for certain students than others.
These situations arise more often for certain students, and therefore we might expect to see more widespread changes for those students.
