CAMFor accounted for 60 67% of the variation in decomposition of foliage, bark and dead wood of eucalypts and pines, while GENDEC accounted for only 53 56% of this variation.
We collated data from 385 studies of decomposition of foliage, bark and wood litter in eucalypt and pine forests for calibration and validation of two alternative sub-models available within FullCAM for decomposition: empirical algorithms in CAMFor, and the process-based GENDEC (requiring additional data on the chemical properties of litter and nitrogen availability).
In that work, a chronosequence approach was used to analyse nutrient concentrations in foliage, bark, wood and branches in teak plantations aged from 1 to 19 years old.
They include: thinning or yellowing of foliage; bark fissures measuring 5-10cm; woodpecker activity because the birds strip away small patches of bark in order to extract the borers; and D-shaped holes about 3mm in diameter.
These models estimated the concentrations of nutrients in several tree tissues (foliage, bark, wood and branches) depending on tree age, and are based on representative teak plantations where the nutritional status is considered as adequate.
The biomass of tree components (foliage, bark, wood and branches) was also measured, and nutrient accumulation in tree biomass was estimated by multiplying nutrient concentration by biomass (Fernández-Moya, Murillo et al. 2014) as part of the same study described in Fernández-Moya et al. (2013).
