Two sections (8 µm) were placed on five polyethylene terephthalate (PET) foil slides.
It was mounted on a slide coated with a thermoplastic membrane (PEN foil slides; Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany) and successively fixed with 70% ethanol at −20°C for 1 min to minimize nucleic acid degradation, thoroughly air dried, and stained for 45 sec at room temperature with a modified toluidine blue staining procedure.
Coronal brain sections (10 μm) containing the S1 barrel field cortex (BF) and GRS were cut by cryostat and mounted on Leica foil slides (Leica Microsystems, Wetzlar, Germany).
The slides were then washed in foil covered slide dishes as follows: 2× SSC, 0.2% SDS at 55°C, 10 minutes, removing cover slips when immersed; 1× SSC.
