To this aim, MFC were implemented in a pilot plant based on two HSSF CW, one fed with primary settled wastewater (Settler line) and the other fed with the effluent of a hydrolytic up-flow sludge blanket reactor (HUSB line).
In this study, an innovative aerobic/anoxic sludge bed bioreactor with two feeding regimes, continuous-fed (an up-flow sludge bed reactor (USBR)) and batch fed (sequencing batch reactor (SBR)), was evaluated for the treatment of an industrial estate wastewater with low BOD5/COD ratio.
The average values of ( {text{NH}}_{ 4}^ ) and ( {text{PO}}_{ 4}^ ) were 27.4 mg L−1 and 11.8 mg L−1, respectively in the conventional secondary treatment effluent of domestic wastewater (Martinez et al. 2000) whereas they were 48 mg ( {text{NH}}_{ 4}^ ) L−1and 16 mg ( {text{PO}}_{ 4}^ ) L−1 in the effluent of up-flow sludge blanket reactor, fed with domestic sewage (Van der Steen et al. 1999).
The proposed plant consists of influent pump station, preliminary treatment (screening, grit removal), primary clarification, conventional (plug flow) activated sludge, secondary clarifier, chlorination, sludge flotation thickening, anaerobic digestion, belt-filter press, and hauling and land filing.
The conventional (plug flow) activated sludge process uses an aeration tank, a settling tank (clarifier), and a sludge return line to treat wastewater.

Statistical design was employed for the optimization of process variables like air flow rate, sludge retention time (SRT) and sorbent dosage.
