This series of rapidly multiplying fissions culminates in a chain reaction in which nearly all the fissionable material is consumed, in the process generating the explosion of what is known as an atomic bomb.
Since the 1960s, pits have been made almost exclusively from plutonium, because it fissions faster, produces more neutrons and has a much smaller critical mass.
Fast reactors, in contrast, do not employ moderators and use much faster neutrons to produce fissions.
The reactor core consisted of pellets of uranium fuel inside bricks made of graphite, which served as a "moderator", reducing the speed of the neutrons in order to maximise their ability to cause further fissions.
