"The message is pretty clear that these sockeye salmon are highly adapted to the energetic demands of their upstream migration," says Brian Riddell, a fisheries scientist who heads the Pacific Salmon Foundation in Vancouver.
The closure will notably give a refuge to bigeye tuna, a species prized for sushi that, according to John Hampton, a fisheries scientist who heads the Oceanic Fisheries Programme of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community in New Caledonia, has been overfished to about 20% to 30% of unexploited levels across the Pacific.
"We take oyster samples every month, all year long, to assess condition in the beds," said Randy Pausina, New Orleans-based head of fisheries for the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries.
"They are very secure in their habitat," said Gene Weller, the head of fisheries for the state division.
She grew up in Ennis, Ireland; her father was a head of fisheries, her mother a marriage counselor.
