The addition of estimated unreported catch (e.g., small-scale and illegal fisheries, bycatch, and discards) has proved vital in providing a more complete picture of fisheries, for example, highlighting a considerably greater global magnitude (annual peak of 86 vs 130 million tonnes) and contrasting trajectory of fish extraction from the oceans than indicated by the FAO database14.
