Open to highly qualified students from all of the Hemisphere on a competitive basis with full scholarships for the needy and with a first-class faculty drawn from Cuba, the United States and the rest of the Hemisphere, Guantanamo could move from being a "Black Hole" to a "Beacon of Light".
By the time the first class graduated in 1955 there were 43 faculty members.
"It's so hard to say what it feels like to be a faculty member here right now," said Ms. Rinehart, whose first class on Monday, an arts survey, will have more than 500 students from all majors.
She graduated from the Faculty of Law of the former University of Ceylon (now, University of Peradeniya) with first class honours, and has her Masters of Law degree from the Harvard Law School.

The "colonialism" course, which already had its first class this fall, was part of an acclaimed UC Berkeley program called DeCal, which allows students to propose and teach courses to their peers with guidance from a faculty member.
