Funding for prescribed fire programs is often justified primarily on hazardous fuels reduction with secondary consideration given for ecological effectiveness, which can be increased by particular fire mosaic patterns in some systems.
Allocations include $77 million to address the opioid epidemic, as well as money for natural disasters, including nearly $4 billion to wild-land fire programs and $12.6 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's disaster relief fund.
The governors also praised President Clinton for asking Congress in his final budget to support the plan with $2.8 billion, more than double the $1.2 billion that is now allocated for wildland fire programs, even if it took a disastrous fire season to prompt the administration to act.
By funding wildfire suppression for large wildland fires under such an approach the uncertainty associated with changes in annual fire expenditures due to different levels of fire activity and the downward funding trends on non-fire programs would be simultaneously addressed.
