Spanish scientists this week wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to protest the closure of the ministry of science and the "lamentable and shameful spectacle" of leading scientists being fired from research institutions because of budget cuts.
Today, the school said in a statement that two of Woo's postdoctoral fellows have been fired for research misconduct and that an internal investigation has cleared Woo of any wrongdoing.
Even though the exterior columns all looked identical, both the grade and thickness of their steel varied from place to place, said Dr. Fahim Sadek, a researcher at the institute's building and fire research lab, who is producing a detailed structural model of the towers on a computer using the original blueprints.
The fire research laboratory is working on a model performance-based code of its own.
In a 2010 test, a federal fire research laboratory found that a two-gallon gasoline container could produce a flame jet 13 feet long.
First released for use on a desktop computer in 1983, it is also widely used by fire investigators, said Richard W. Bukowski, a senior engineer at the fire research laboratory, who helped create the "zone" model.
"We want a link between the performance in the lab test and the performance in a real-scale, live situation," said William Grosshandler, chief of the fire research division of the standards institute.
Moritz added: Basically, global fire research is at quite an early stage… There really are very few attempts to do this, due to the complexity of the problem and the number of global climate projections to incorporate.
Another investigator, Dr. Richard G. Gann, a senior research scientist at the building and fire research lab, said earlier tests showed that intact triplets of workstations typically put out the equivalent of 10to1212 megawatts of power at peak burning, which lasted for about 20 minutes.
So Dr. Kevin McGrattan, a mathematician at the building and fire research lab, is using the Fire Dynamics Simulator to knit together data from the small-scale tests and calculate the sweep of the fires over the entire 102 minutes of the disaster -- from the impact of the first plane until the second tower fell.
