Additionally, a new Plan-Do-Check-Adjust cycle was established for the management of fire-fighting engineering, which includes the delineation of fire zones, the evaluation of fire behavior, the optimization of fire-fighting measures, the performance of the fire-fighting plan, and the assessment of control results to determine whether the fire-fighting plan should be reformulated or improved.
The effectiveness of these systems has been proved in data accumulated from throughout the world: in buildings protected by sprinkler systems that had fires, the system extinguished fires in 65percentt of the cases and contained fires until other fire-fighting measures could be taken in 32percentt of the cases.
The approach introduces several novel modelling techniques developed by VTT, such as the probabilistic fire simulator which is an interface enabling to run fire simulation models in the Monte Carlo mode and the time-dependent event-tree method which enables to take into account the active fire safety measures such as detectors, first-aid fire fighting, sprinklers and fire brigade intervention.
The model compares the benefit provided by these wall options with the benefit provided by other fire protection measures such as detection (manual and automatic), automatic suppression, manual fire fighting (including fire brigade action), spillage control and separation.
