We did not follow a used-versus-unused design because our comparison between ATSR fire data and the Canadian large fire database (Text S2, Figure S2) demonstrated that despite the overall similarity between the databases, fires detected by ATSR during the 1996 2006 time period do not represent all pixels that are fire-prone.
To assess the impact of fire on each LHA we used the GIS to draw a 100 km radius circle around its PM monitoring station, and then calculated the daily sum of FRP from all fires detected within that circle.
We downloaded these data for BC and its surrounding areas from the Fire Information Resource Management System FIRMSS) [ 28], and used a geographic information system (GIS) to map all of the fires detected during the study period.
In mice with intact astroglial networks, increasing the stimulus length by 5-fold enhanced the presynaptic input by ~7-fold, as measured by the fiber volley amplitude (n = 7, Fig. 1B), and also resulted in synaptically-induced firing, detected as population spike (Fig. 1A).
However, these synapses are sensitive to a sudden change in firing rate, detecting rate changes in low- and high-frequency inputs with similar sensitivity.
"Fire damage can best be contained when the fire is detected and extinguished early," Mr. Strauss-Kahn said.
Some use sprinklers whose pipes stay empty until the fire is detected; others use chemicals or gases to extinguish fires, although one of the popular gases was found to threaten the ozone layer.
That exceeds the 2,643 high-confidence fire alerts detected from June 13 - June 30, at the peak of the previous fires and haze crisis, WRI says.
