Across the West today, 22,650 firefighters were battling 33 major fires covering 584,500 acres, the Boise fire center said.

According to the fire center in Boise, more than 503,751 acres are burning in 42 large fires, including fires in Montana that started overnight.
"The purpose is to allow contractors to inspect planes and give crews some rest," said Jack deGolia, a spokesman for the fire center.
Nancy Lull, a spokeswoman for the fire center in Boise, Idaho, said the tankers would be grounded for at least two days while their safety was evaluated.
"There has been approval for two battalions of firefighters to be released to Washington," said Dave Johnson, an official at the fire center at Icicle.
Mr. Sept said the bureau would add 500 firefighters, converting 400 temporary fire-season jobs to full-time year-round jobs, hiring new 20-person crews in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada and Utah, and adding 20 new smoke jumpers at the fire center.
