To efficiently search this space and provide a finer density grid in regions with highest likelihoods, we first performed a search on a coarse grid of points over the widest sensible range of parameter values with M = 10,000 samples, then selected a much smaller range of parameter values based on the regions with highest likelihood on the coarse grid.

This could have been caused by a short-wavelength Bouguer anomaly derived from shallow, fine-scale density structures, smaller than the grid size of the inversion model; however, shallow, ultra-fine-scale features are not the focus of this study.
The importance of fine-root density in determining the magnitude of root bundle tensile strength is shown in Fig. 5 in comparison to the results of Fig. 2b, where the maximum root reinforcement for a tree with 0.3 m DBH is expected at about 1.9 m, exactly at the distance where the maximum intensity of fine-root density is reached.
Fine-root density appeared to play a major role in the control of Rs, explaining a great part of the spatial variability of Rs.
