The court agreed to reconsider that ruling but also ordered mediation between the state and the coalition of school districts that filed the school financing lawsuit in 1991.
Notable swings and misses include monster cases in Manhattan (the city was seeking payback for lead-abatement costs in hundreds of housing developments), Louisiana and Texas (suits were filed by school districts in both states for damages related to lead in schools).
In the three well-publicized cases earlier this month, new charges were filed against school employees who had been investigated on sexual misconduct charges before.
"It's true that the number who actually leave is not huge," said Michael Rebell, a lawyer for the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, a coalition of advocacy groups that filed the school financing lawsuit.
Yet she persuaded a Probate Court judge last April to declare Bianca legally dead, to support the wrongful-death suit she has filed against school officials because they failed to report the girl's absence.
Each state's spokesman gave information about the attitudes and actions of governmental officials, about petitions filed with school boards and the responses to them, about negotiations conducted, and about lawsuits, current or contemplated.
After the suit was filed, the school district started making changes to comply with the law.
The suit was originally filed by school districts that represent up to two thirds of the students in the state of Texas after legislators cut $5.4 billion from public education funding in 2011.
Since, then the New York Times notes, "the California case and the Education Department's 2014 statement appear in many of the exemption applications filed by school administrators" for religious exemptions to Title IX.
She said that the local's rank-and-file, school workers, would meet on Sept. 4 to vote on the recommendation.
