In 2008, the non-profit organisation SwitzerlandMobility launched a 19,000km network of hiking, cycling and canoeing routes that are tightly integrated with rail, bus and ferry services, bike rental stations and overnight accommodations.

We spent a day on the peaceful sands of Chappaquiddick Island, where cars must wait interminably for the three-car ferry but bikes pay half and wait not at all; another day we popped our bikes on the bus and went off to the beach at Aquinnah, staring at the gorgeous multicolored cliffs and averting our eyes from the less gorgeous bodies that populate the clothing-optional sands adjoining them.
Both P&O and Condor ferries allow bikes on board their boats.

To most New Yorkers, yesterday's labor agreement represented little more than a crisis averted and the promise of being able to commute without a bike, ferry or sturdy pair of running shoes.
