Because natural populations of P. laminata exhibit high abundance and a synchronised life cycle at the landscape level, the soil-to-litter feeding shift that depends on P. laminata's developmental stage-of may cause large temporal variation in N dynamics in forest ecosystems compared to macrofauna-free systems.
A feeding shift that excludes a period of predominant breastfeeding, as reported in this study, is consistent with another Canadian study that suggests that Canadian mothers favour complementary feeding/replacement feeding rather than predominant breastfeeding when the infants are at an early age [ 50].
Instead, it is likely that the whales expanded their range of feeding, shifting to the water column from the seafloor.
Traveling nightly to feed, shifting occasionally from one communal roost to another, they carry their infections widely and spread them to one another.
