Because natural populations of P. laminata exhibit high abundance and a synchronised life cycle at the landscape level, the soil-to-litter feeding shift that depends on P. laminata's developmental stage-of may cause large temporal variation in N dynamics in forest ecosystems compared to macrofauna-free systems.
A feeding shift that excludes a period of predominant breastfeeding, as reported in this study, is consistent with another Canadian study that suggests that Canadian mothers favour complementary feeding/replacement feeding rather than predominant breastfeeding when the infants are at an early age [ 50].

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.7554/eLife.09460.008 Using ex vivo organotypic cultures of explants from PER2::LUC reporter mice subjected to aligned or misaligned feeding, we confirmed that daytime feeding shifts the phase of the liver oscillator (p < 0.001) without altering the phase of the SCN oscillator (p = 0.07; Figure 4A,C,D).
The particle traps collected a mixing of 29% of uneaten feed and 71% of feces, when drum filter eliminated all remaining uneaten feed, shifting the isotopic signatures of suspended solids from −23.8 and 7.9‰ to −24.9 and 8.3‰ for δ13C and δ15N, respectively.
While the synchronizing effect of light is similar to the effect from the SCN (as manifested in the DD condition), the restricted feeding shifts the phases of peripheral rhythms differently and clusters the phase variance only in liver and kidney in BKO's.
