The use of immune enhancing feeds enriched with a variety of nutrients including amino acids, arginine, glutamine, and nucleotides has recently been associated with fewer acquired infections [ 35].
We tested how MeHg concentrations of one and two year-old pond-raised carp changed with different food quality: a) zooplankton (natural pond diet), b) cereals enriched with vegetable oil (VO ponds), and c) compound feeds enriched with marine fish oils (FO ponds).
In the MetaPlus study, immune-modulating high-protein (IMHP) enteral feeding enriched with glutamine, fish oil and antioxidants was compared with standard high-protein (HP) enteral feeding in critically ill patients, and a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.57 (95% CI, 1.03 2.39; P = 0.04) was shown for 6-month mortality adjusted for age and APACHE-II score comparing IMHP with HP [7].
A total of 301 adult patients who were expected to be ventilated and to require EN for more than 72 h were randomized to the intervention feed (enriched with GLN and with antioxidants including selenium and fish oils) or control feed within 48 h of ICU admission and continued during ICU stay [ 14].
Group C was given such a feed (enriched with lactose) and the decline in diversity of the faecal coliform flora was less pronounced in this group with no accentuated dip on day 7, which indicates that the flora was less dominated by the challenge strains used (Fig. 1).
