Gallaudet's admissions are rolling, and while the school draws students from around the world, according to Ms. Murphy, there are three feeder high schools from which a large number of Gallaudet undergraduates matriculate: Maryland School for the Deaf, California School for the Deaf (both its Fremont and Riverside locations) and Gallaudet's own high school in Washington.
Additionally, the former guidelines had been multifaceted, she said, taking into account intramural sports, popularity of sports in feeder high schools and other more impressionistic factors.
The assessment will also include more telling measures, like participation rates in feeder high schools or recreational leagues, and the views of administrators and coaches.
Tuesday's policy change will allow universities to use surveys, but it will require that they show they are meeting students' interests in other ways — by looking at requests by club teams to be recognized as varsity sports, for example, or by analyzing athletic participation at feeder high schools.
