A24 Vehicles May Return to Dunes Federal officials want to reopen land in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area in California that was put off limits to dune buggies and other off-road vehicles in late 2000.
In 1923, after federal efforts to protect the dunes had faltered, Indiana legislators created a 2,182-acre 2,182-acre.
Those owners have refused to grant easements to allow the federal government to build a massive dune along a 50-mile stretch of the Jersey Shore.
But it was developed by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a federal agency, for its strength in dune stabilization, so do not assume it is better behaved in the spreading department.
The National Park Service, which oversees the seashore, will allow time and the tides to do their work on the federal lands and eventually rebuild the dunes.
Just last week the Bureau of Land Management retreated from another carefully negotiated Clinton-era policy when it proposed, partly in response to local pressure, to reopen 50,000 acres of sensitive federal lands in California's southeastern corner to dune buggies.
The proposals advanced in the report are separate from a long-term plan to restore the coastal marsh and repair breached sand dunes at Prime Hook, which the federal Fish and Wildlife Service made final in late December.
Upset that more money and effort was focused on protecting the much larger and wealthier Dakota Dunes, Mr. Koob said he hoped for federal support to rebuild.
"It's a complicated formula that the federal agencies that underwrite the insurance use, but having dunes will factor into it and certainly can't hurt, Mr. Wierman said.
Federal legislation enacted in 2000 created the Great Sand Dunes National Preserve out of 65 square miles (168 square km) of national forestland to the north and east of the monument.
