Gene density along the chromosomes is correlated with the structural features of chromosomes; gene-dense regions tend to be located towards the centre of the nucleus, while gene-poor regions are observed close to the nuclear periphery, i.e. LADs.
Having described how TADs can be connected to various structural features of chromosomes, we will now discuss how they may also play a direct functional role in controlling the emergence and the activity of cis-regulatory landscapes.
Certain distinct features of chromosomes are defined by types of chromatin, including highly compact heterochromatin, which is generally associated with gene silencing, and the specialized chromatin found at centromeres which mediate the interaction between chromosomes and microtubules, required for chromosome segregation during mitosis and meiosis.
