There may not be a big demand to upgrade most commonplace computers, the reasoning goes, but there will always be a demand for the fastest systems among the customers that actually do need additional speed and processing power.
It is now preparing to begin a sustained push to build systems capable of computing at what is known as exascale performance — one thousand times faster than today's fastest systems.
Interestingly, the third and fourth fastest systems on the Graph500 list – two Cray XMT supercomputers housed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories – managed their high ranking despite having relatively few processors: 128 apiece.
According to Jack Dongarra, the keeper of the official Top500 list of the world's fastest systems, there are five systems in the planning or construction phases that will exceed the Tianhe 1A in power.
In 2008, Darpa, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency assembled a panel of the nation's best supercomputer experts and asked them to think about ways in which it might be possible to reach an exascale computer — a supercomputer capable of executing one quintillion mathematical calculations in a second, about 1,000 times faster than today's fastest systems.
Designed to provide maximum sustainable performance to the users of HLRS - ignoring both peak and Linpack performance numbers - it has even climbed to number 8 in the TOP500 list and is one of the fastest systems in the world used both by research and industry.
