Ostojić-Andrić et al. [ 15] following a recent study accomplished in Serbia classifies the farms where the cows are kept tethered during the entire year in the acceptable (two farms) and enhanced (one farm) categories.

The Fe/Mn ratios in forage in the present study suggest that in the forage from scrapie-afflicted farms iron may be predominant over manganese, in forage from scrapie-prone and scrapie-free farms (categories 1 and 2 combined), the the two metals are in balance (Fig. 2), whereas in forage from scrapie-free farms in scrapie-free areas manganese may dominate over iron.

On the other hand, the mean iron concentration in forage samples from scrapie-prone farms, which were of a similar number (40 samples), was also significantly lower than in samples from scrapie-afflicted farms, and did in the same way not differ significantly from the mean iron concentration in forage from scrapie-free farms (categories 1 and 2 combined).

There were three categories of farms: Category 1: Farms located in counties where scrapie has never been diagnosed.

Jóhannesson et al. [ 1] have previously found significantly higher concentration of manganese (Mn) in the forage from scrapie-free farms in scrapie free counties (Category 1) than on scrapie-free farms (Category 2), scrapie-prone farms (Category 3) or on scrapie-afflicted farms (Category 4) in scrapie-affected counties in Iceland.

It should be noted that no samples were received from scrapie-afflicted farms (Category 4; scrapie recently diagnosed).
