"fared" is a correct and usable word in written English.
It can be used as either a verb or an adjective. Verb: His plans far outweighed his expectations, so he fared quite well. Adjective: He was in an unfamiliar situation, so he fared poorly.
A 1975 production of George Bernard Shaw's Heartbreak House for the National Theatre fared better, but a couple of years later came a calamitous production of Julius Caesar for Peter Hall, also at the National.
