Semi-automated ECG-triggered measurement of IMT was performed in 10 mm segments of the far (CCA-FW-IMT) and near wall (CCA-NW-IMT) of the CCA and in the most proximal 10 mm far wall segment of the bulb (BULB-FW-IMT).
We used the scans of the far wall CCAs for mean IMT, because several methodological reviews [ 28- 30] have reported that i) IMT can only be measured accurately in the far wall position, and ii) multiple, good-quality scans may be obtained from nearly every patient from the CCAs, while the percentage of missing images from the internal carotid arteries is higher.
As far as the CCA method is concerned, the roughness is approximately 135% greater as compared to WET for both grinding depths.
For comparability with past studies, and to address differences in CIMT measurement protocols, we used the mean of all IMT measurements of the left and/or right common carotid (CCA) far wall made 10 mm proximal to the bulb as the common outcome for the present analysis.
