The Workhouse food, which is all homemade, runs to a small but good-quality selection of wraps and ciabatta, Moroccan-spiced pasties, sausage rolls and fantastic cakes.
Using organic, Fairtrade and local ingredients, Wheelwright creates fantastic cakes (try the fragrant lavender scones, £1), soups and sandwiches, light, brightly flavoured savoury tarts, and, perhaps, her masterpiece: the herby cheesejack (£1.80).
What you will notice is the very good coffee (from £1.65, supplied by local roasters, Bailies), the fantastic cakes and scones (around £1.80), and a reasonably priced menu of sandwiches, wraps and daily specials, such as red Thai vegetable curry.

A basement bakery keeps the counter filled with fantastic cakes (rich, ganache-like chocolate brownies are particularly brilliant, £1.70), and breads that are used at lunch for "saucy buns", filled with, for instance, slow-cooked pork, jalapenos, smoky tomatoes and mozzarella, or buttermilk fried chicken with avocado and garlic mayonnaise.
The Old Church Coffeehouse, (353-27) 63663, on the main road near the Eccles, serves cappuccino and tea and fantastic lemon cake in a converted Gothic church.
Finely diced, sweet-hot stem ginger is fantastic in cakes, biscuits, sauces and trifles.
