In "The Parallel Universe" (column, May 12), Thomas L. Friedman paints a frightening picture of a near future very different from our comfortable, familiar present.
To travel the hundred and fifty miles or so from Dublin and its lush surrounding counties to the flinty peaks and rocky shores of Connemara is to voyage from a more or less familiar present into a mysterious, enduring antiquity.
