During the growth of the rudist reef, when it reached the wave base when sea level fell, the rudist sand was formed from the reef by strong current erosion.
They tend to face upslope, which may facilitate burying via falling sediment, bring more fish swimming downstream from the reef, or ease targeting by silhouetting prey against the sunlight.
The 50% and 95% kernel density contours fell within 17 and 39 m of the reef, respectively, though gag spent the most time about 10 m from the reef.
Volunteer scuba divers will be getting samples from the reef.
The researchers also took core samples from the reef and determined that nothing like the bleaching had occurred in Belize's lagoonal reefs in at least 3,000 years.
One distribution is near the reef edge, and the other is far from the reef edge (approximately >700 m).

The water here – clear enough for paddlers to see boulders that have fallen from the rock walls – is home to reef fish, flying fish, spinner dolphins and endangered green sea turtles who often swim directly underneath the kayaks.
