According to the way these two basic interventions are applied, five basic maintenance policies can be distinguished: Failure Based Maintenance, Design-Out Maintenance, Use Based Maintenance, Condition Based Maintenance and Detection Based Maintenance.

"The algorithms are extremely valuable because they help us build a model of predictive and condition-based maintenance, so we can predict failures before they occur, and we can make determinations about service based on the actual conditions of the equipment," says Randy Weaver, advanced-technology-systems program manager at RGR.
These four maintenance strategies include: i) time-based preventative maintenance using visual inspection; ii) scheduled condition-based maintenance (CBM); iii) on-line/continuous CBM; and iv) run-to-failure corrective maintenance strategy.
By implementing such a PM programme, the reliability of the door system will undoubtedly increase as the majority of failures can very likely be detected and rectified with certain mileage-based maintenance tasks at the periodicities given.
Time-based maintenance is performed after fixed time-intervals to avoid failure during operation.
