Patients were excluded if they had a history of smoking, heart failure, occupational history of chemical agent exposure or a lung inflammatory disorder of a different origin.

In other words, that a good deal of what we see and ascribe to a deficit in character or intelligence — criminal behavior, family breakdown, occupational failure — maybe just be the residual effects of on-field impacts.
