The phrase "fail the examination" is correct and usable in written English.
It can be used when discussing the outcome of a test or assessment where the individual did not achieve a passing score.
Example: "After studying for weeks, I was devastated to learn that I would fail the examination."
Alternatives: "not pass the exam" or "be unsuccessful in the test".
