To help understand the limits of CO2 fertilization, scientists are turning to free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiments.
So far there have been no FACE experiments in the tropics, where logistics are much more difficult.
These figures are higher than reported in previous FACE experiments, for either cool or warm seasons crops and suggest that this basic commodity would benefit from a CO2 enriched air, both in terms of yield performance and water savings.
An increase in productivity induced by elevated CO2 has been documented in several grassland FACE experiments (e.g., [15, 56 58]), while actual productivity changes were impacted by interactions among the elevated CO2 concentration, climate [59], soil conditions [60], nitrogen availability [61 64], and community composition [57, 65].
Changes in litter quantity as a consequence of global climate change are becoming increasingly likely; recent FACE experiments have shown that litterfall increases with elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations [1] [5] and predicted changes in rainfall distribution patterns [6] and temperature [7] may also affect litterfall by altering leafing phenology.
