Extreme cold waves, it says, are less common since the 1980s, while extreme heat waves are more common.
Extreme heat waves have become more common compared to extreme cold waves.
In fact, other than a 30-hour dry spell on 29 March 1848, when an ice jam in the upper river blocked the regular flow of water, it was nearly unheard of until early 2014, when the falls came to a near standstill twice during the extreme North American cold wave.
The two regions have been experiencing increased exposure and vulnerability to extreme cold weather, heat waves, floods, land- and mudslides, avalanches, forest fires and earthquakes in the past few years.
Drilling opponents and some oil-spill veterans assert that the extreme cold, storms, high waves, winds, darkness, and fog that occur routinely in the region could challenge spill cleanup, particularly in the event of a late-fall blowout, when ice begins to gather.
This effect is generally more prolonged than for heat-related deaths [ 10- 13] and, in contrast with evidence during heat waves, extreme cold seems not to be followed by any mortality displacement [ 13].
Though the field was discovered in 1981, oil executives long considered Snohvit out of reach, because of the Barents Sea's shifting ice packs, brutal waves and extreme cold.
Climate models indicate that seasonal weather patterns and conditions will continue to vary from current climate conditions as average global temperatures increase (Albritton et al. 2001), and climate change is expected to contribute to an increase in the intensity of extreme cold events as well as heat waves (Lionello et al. 2008).
The extremes sub-project is looking at the cold wave in Europe in February 2013 to see how it was handled in the models.
Consumption varies tremendously due to weather (i.e., air conditioning during heat waves and heating during extreme cold) and more regular patterns of use (e.g., lower demand during the night and on weekends or holidays).
Although studies on susceptibility to temperatures are accumulating, no studies have studied and compared the groups susceptible to higher and lower temperature with groups susceptible to longer episodes of extreme temperature conditions (e.g. heat and cold wave duration).
