30 We required each expiration to last a minimum of 6 s, to reach an end-expiratory plateau of 25 ml/s, to be without an unsatisfactory start defined by a back-extrapolation volume that was either 5% or 150 ml of the forced vital capacity (FVC) and to be free of cough or glottis closure artefacts.
Our acceptability criteria were based directly on the ATS/ERS and were as follows: expiration ≥6.0 s; back-extrapolation volume <5.0% of the FVC or <150 ml, whichever is larger; the end-expiratory plateau <25 ml/s and no evidence of cough, glottis closure or leaks upon curve review.

Extrapolation of wood volume from inventory plots to landscape scales with airborne LiDAR revealed a high degree of spatial variability in wood volume distribution, with the influence of forest management clearly evident in the patch characteristics (Fig. 5).
Furthermore, an additional mean displacement term and changes in the extrapolation behavior in volume interpolation were introduced.
Volumetric estimates are preferred, as they avoid the assumption that tumour grows or shrinks uniformly, although volume extrapolation using one measurement is inaccurate in comparison with that calculated by proper volumetry.
Extrapolation of adipose tissue volumes or pulmonary gas volumes has been applied by other investigators in order to limit radiation in quantitative CT studies in patients [ 16, 17].
This extrapolation error may cause the volume of a single exceptional tree to be estimated so high that a timber volume of more than 2000 m(^3) per hectare is attained, which is not realistic.
