In 1753, a century earlier, the British naval surgeon James Lind, in "A Treatise on Scurvy," specifically ascribed scurvy to a "want of fresh vegetables and greens" and recommended that vessels carry an extract of lemons to prevent or cure the malady.
Presumably carmint (said to contain "total extracts" of the three herbs [ 66]) is an ethanolic extract of coriander, lemon balm and spearmint leaves (and possibly stems), although this is not explicitly stated.
