"external hires" is a correct and usable part of a sentence in written English.
It is typically used to refer to someone who has been hired from outside of a company. For example, "The company hired several external hires to fill important positions within the organization."
Some these are external hires and others are internal promotions.
According to Sheffield Haworth, a recruiting firm, 31% of financial firms' external hires in Asia in 2010 transferred from Britain or America, compared with 8% the year before.
