The spatial extent of grid points with the number of used stations (Fig. 3) show that the grid points mostly covered the Japanese archipelago, but no grids were located very close to the shoreline, in particular, on the Japan Sea side where station coverage was sparse.
Because of the spreading effects of a point target in the Fourier-based reconstruction, which can be described as the extent of the point spread function, the scattering from a point target contributes to the coarse-resolution image not only at its true position but also at the neighboring pixels.
The amount of inflated variance depends chiefly on the extent of set point deviation and activation energy but is also influenced by choice of experimental design.
