Yet they can be shaped and in some cases completely changed by prolonged exposure to conflicting values, by concerted thought and discussion, by the feeling that one is "out of step" with others whom one knows and respects, and by the development of significantly new evidence or circumstances.
We first consider exposure to conflict risk.
Second, it is important to note that substantial evidence indicates that exposure to conflict in Burundi was random (Uvin 1999).
We follow the same approach of Verwimp and Van Bavel (2014) to create a variable in which exposure to conflict varies by province and age cohort.
Because previous studies have shown that exposure to conflict was random, we assume that displaced individuals are more or less evenly distributed across Burundi, with proximity to the border being the most important determinant of international versus internal displacement.
Please note that the variable measuring exposure to conflict measures the number of years of schooling age that the individual was exposed to conflict (i.e. based on timing of the conflict), while the displacement variable indicates the number of years of schooling age that the individual was displaced abroad.
