Namely, openness to experience positively predicted Political Activity, Knowledge/Relevance, and Exposure to Evolution and negatively predicted Creationist Reasoning and Political/Religious Conservatism (see Kruglanski et al. 2006; Jost et al. 2003).
Although exposure to biology and evolution coursework seems to be associated with acceptance of evolution, it is less clear whether or not teachers' individual knowledge of evolution content influences acceptance.
Exposure to biology and evolution coursework is positively correlated with acceptance, though the association between an individual teacher's understanding and acceptance of evolution has been shown to be weak.
Whilst comparisons of this nature have been done in the past [ 6, 10] it should be noted that even within the high endemic area there can be substantial variation in exposure to schistosomiasis and evolution of the disease at the individual level [ 2].
The strong link between earthquake-related exposures and the evolution of PTSD indicates that earthquake exposures may increase symptomatology, the long-term course of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms may depend on the persistent exposure to stressors [ 30].
Important factors in the emergence of novel infectious diseases from animal sources include extensive exposure and rapid virus evolution (8 ), which facilitate human-to-human transmission.
As can be seen in Table 3, Creationist Reasoning was positively correlated with Political/Religious Conservatism (r = 0.687) and negatively correlated with Knowledge/Relevance (r = −0.798) and Exposure to Evolution (r = −0.588).
We believe that this relationship will exist in part because some previous researchers have found that students' exposure to evolution and science in the classroom impacts their views and acceptance of evolution and science (Fuerst 1984; Gogolin and Swartz 1992; Ingram and Nelson 2006; Moore and Cotner 2009).
These 16 constructs or subscales can be further accounted for by six higher-order factors representing Political Activity, Political/Religious Conservatism, Creationist Reasoning, Knowledge/Relevance of Evolution, Evolutionary Misconceptions, and Exposure to Evolution (see Hawley et al. 2011 for details on survey creation and survey structure).
