The head of Loral Space & Communications, Bernard Schwartz, contributes $600,000 in soft money to the Democratic Party and the President decides to allow Loral to export a communications satellite to China for launch on a Chinese rocket -- despite a pending criminal investigation of Loral for providing China with missile-launch technology.
All remain in effect, though earlier this year the Obama administration allowed the export of communications equipment.
In a sign of Taiwan's dependence on high-tech manufacturing, its exports of computer and communications equipment and other electronic gear to all countries amounted to $70.66 billion of the $130.64 billion in total exports last year.
"It is the responsibility of the exporter to verify the eligibility of these products in the country where the product will be exported," says communications advisor Jacqueline Roy.
But the decision to permit the export of personal communications technology suggests a welcome willingness on Washington's part to reduce the burden of the sanctions on ordinary Iranians.
Leading the list of exports were mobile communications equipment, semiconductors, computers and automobiles.
The commission's plan to impose tariffs on Chinese solar panels starting on June 6, together with the commission's preparations to begin a similar trade case against Chinese exports of wireless communications gear, "would seriously hurt the Chinese industries and workers concerned and seriously sour the climate on bilateral trade and economic engagement," he said in a statement.
His party, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, was never really likely to lose (as it happens, it won 72% of the vote), but the export of Brazilian political communications skills added a new layer to the construction and extractives expertise that Mr dos Santos made central to the reconstruction of Angola.
Construction companies, retail stores, restaurants, export-import businesses and communications enterprises all shed jobs, more than offsetting modest growth in the financial sector.
Strong exports in knowledge, services and communications industries now overtake strong manufacturing exports from world-beaters such as Ericsson, Ikea and Volvo, while the government runs a hefty financial surplus.
