A plausible explanation for this reads as follows.
Possible explanations include a shared genetic basis for reading and cognition (as shown by, e.g., Harlaar, Hayiou-Thomas, & Plomin, 2005; Haworth, Meaburn, Harlaar, & Plomin, 2007), or influences of traits that themselves underpin reading, such as orthographic representation, on the development of verbal cognitive ability (Martin et al., 2009).
There are two likely explanations for unfixable reads: i) the read is correct, and originates from a low-expression transcript for which there is a higher-expression homolog present in the sample; and ii) the read contains too many errors to be rescued.
The second explanation for the reading frame distribution is that the preferred reading frames may be more efficiently translated because they use relatively common codons for their amino acids.
The child, Tochtli (or "rabbit" in Nahautl, Mexico's indigenous language), also has an occasionally precocious vocabulary – but we have a plausible explanation for this: he reads the dictionary before he goes to bed.
We currently do not have a good explanation for these mapped reads.
