With new CEO Kazuo Hirai at the helm, the Japanese electronics company said it expects an additional tax expense of 300 billion yen (£2.32 billion) in the fiscal fourth quarter ending March 30.
The Williams Companies, a pipeline owner that is selling assets to remain solvent, said it expected a pretax expense of $56 million in the fourth quarter because of the repurchase of $951 million of debt.
The company, which also plans to reduce the size of its German office, expects to record an expense of as much as $30 million in the fiscal fourth quarter and another $30 million in fiscal 2006.
Harvey Gutman, a spokesman for Pathmark, said the company expected a first-quarter expense of $3.2 million for the job cuts.
Northwest Airlines said yesterday that it expected a pension-related expense of more than $700 million at the end of this year and wanted to spread out its contributions to the retirement plan and to make some contributions in stock to conserve cash.
In a statement on Tuesday, Aetna said it expected an additional $90 million in medical expenses for the first quarter, costs that had spilled over from late last year.
That means it will now go from buoying its earnings with $124 million in phantom pension income in 2001 to an expected pension expense of $95 million in 2003, a swing of $219 million.
Navient expects operating expenses to total less than $900 million this year, a sum that -- after excluding government-ordered refunds to aggrieved borrowers -- would exceed the company's expenses in each of the last three years, according to analysts at Compass Point Research & Trading.
And according to its filing, Angie's List expects marketing expenses to continue to grow, as it spends more money on advertising.
The company says that it is continuing to invest revenue back into infrastructure, development of and sales and marketing, and expects operating expenses to increase significantly.
