The discrepancy between observed and expected values can be ascribed to the fact that the poisson expectation assumes equal gene length sequence for all genes, a clearly untrue assumption, particularly for the human genome.
Admittedly, this expectation assumes that weekly hours are not reduced by a larger magnitude than hourly earnings are increased, but previous analysis of hours effects does not suggest evidence of such large effects (see Belman and Wolfson 2014).
